Counselling Modalities
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
This approach is designed to utilise the power of the human mind to challenge negative thinking pattrens with positive self talk. It also gives us new coping strategies and life skills to manage emotions such as stress, anger, guilt, fear and shame. CBT works well for people having problems with depression, anxiety and addiction. It encourages us to unlearn unwanted patterns of thinking and replace these with new coping mechanisms, in order to manage our emotions more effectively and change our behaviour. It is a structured form of therapy that empowers us with clarity and wisdom to make changes and to manage our lives.
Solution Focused Therapy
This focuses on what clients want to achieve through therapy rather than on the problem(s) that made them seek help. The approach does not focus on the past, but instead, focuses on the present and the future. The therapist / counsellor uses respectful curiosity to invite the client to envision their preferred future and then therapist and client start attending to any moves towards it whether these are small increments or large changes. To support this, questions are asked about the client's story, strengths and resources and about exceptions to the problem.
Group Programs
KYDS runs an array of group programs that can be tailored to meet your organisation's needs. We currently run programs in Conflict Resolution; Paying Attention to Self (PATS - support for adolescents who have a parent with a mental illness); Young Men and Young Women's groups (dealing with body image, self esteem and relationships); Bullying; HSC Stress; Safe Partying; Drug and Alcohol and Sexual Health (Crossroads Program).
